"Choose you this day whom you will serve."

Joshua 24:15

Joshua had just put on a dramatic demonstration of God's power in contrast to the impotency of the priests of Baal. Then he issued the challenge found in our text: which side do you choose, God's side or Baal's side? It's your decision, no pressure, no threats, no coercion, just a simple request requiring a decisive action.

The choice that God offers us involves eternal destiny, but it is a voluntary decision. God does not force us to do it His way. He causes the rain to fall equally on the just and the unjust. He pours out His blessings with disinterested love on the righteous and the unrighteous. The consequences of our decision are plainly outlined in Scripture. Eternal salvation is offered to those who choose God's way; eternal death and oblivion is the destiny of those who choose the broad way contrary to God's will.

The deciding factor in this choice is not God's will, but our will. We make the choice by a deliberate action of the will. There are some individuals who have weak wills and have difficulty deciding anything. Theirs is a life of vacillation and fence-straddling, and I am sure that the Lord understands and patiently guides such toward the right way. Others have strong wills and are able to decide on a course of action and to follow through with complete resolve and dedication. Such persons form the steadfast core of leaders in every church. We need to develop strong wills, and this can only be done with exercise.

"Once to every man and nation comes the moment to decide for the good or evil side" (James Russell Lowell). A current advertising slogan on the radio is, "You decide.com." This slogan appeals to our nature to be independent, of not being told what to do. Certain facts are presented which would influence this decision, but no high pressure tactics are used. If you like the deal, then you choose to buy their product.

The appeal comes to us in various ways. Perhaps a Bible study, an evangelistic campaign, a sermon, or the testimony of a friend. These are ways that the Holy Spirit speaks to our hearts, and He wishes to convict us of the truth, but the influence of preachers, friends, and teachers can only go so far; in the end the decision is ours.
