Not long ago some environmentalist asked the question, 'what kind of car would Jesus drive'? The hidden agenda of this question is revealed by its corollary, 'would Jesus drive an SUV'? Of course the expected answer is, 'no.' Jesus would be too sensitive to the politically correct view that SUVs are evil because they consume inordinate quantities of fossil fuel and they pollute the atmosphere with inordinate quantities of noxious fumes. Someone has even calculated how many more barrels of oil an SUV would use in one year than an ordinary sedan. Of course, if we carry this reasoning a bit further, we could ask how much more oil do sedans use than small compact cars, then how much more oil do compacts use than motorcycles, or how much more oil do motorcycles use than scooters. Eventually, if you pursue this line of reasoning you will be politically correct while riding bicycles or horses. Jesus was not politically correct in His day, so I'm not sure what kind of car He would drive.
Just recently, someone has expanded on this theme by asking, 'what kind of house would Jesus live in'? This person is concerned that the size of new houses is increasing. A few years ago a house with three bedrooms and 2,000 square feet of floor area seemed adequate for the average household. Today, these requirements have expanded to four bedrooms or more and 5,000 square feet of floor area is common. Someone has calculated how much more heating oil a 5,000 sq. ft. house would use than a 2,000 sq. ft. house. The implication is that people should be more considerate of their fellow man and the environment and be less wasteful in the use of our precious energy resources. Again, if we carry this reasoning to its logical conclusion, in order to be politically correct we would end up living in tents. Since Jesus did not have a house nor even a bed, if He lived on earth today He would probably not have a mansion. However, we are all going to have mansions someday if we are faithful, and we won't have anyone breathing down our necks about wasted energy.
Since it seems to be fashionable to ask, what would Jesus do'?, I would ask, 'if Jesus were alive today what would be His day of worship'? Would He be politically correct and go to church on Sunday or would He buck the popular practice and worship on some other day? Jesus said that He is the Lord of the Sabbath; therefore, the Lord's Day is the Sabbath, not Sunday. Jesus kept the Sabbath, the disciples kept the Sabbath, the church kept the Sabbath for 300 years, and the saints will observe the Sabbath in the New Earth. As a result of some distorted biblical exegesis and a kowtowing to tradition, many modern Christians are worshiping the Lord of the Sabbath on Sunday. So, I believe it is obvious what the answer would be to the question, 'what would Jesus do'?
