This morning when I cut my grapefruit in half, as is my custom, I counted the number of segments, and I rejoiced that this one was mathematically correct because it had thirteen segments, and there on hangs the tale of the NUMBERS OF CREATION.
The Greek civilization in its heyday reached a pinnacle of excellence in architecture and sculpture that has been unrivaled in subsequent cultures. In their search for the ultimate expression of these two pursuits they distilled them down to an essence called "geometry." In their study of nature they discovered a ever recurring relationship of numbers which they called the DIVINE PROPORTION. For instance, their sculpture was not produced by using human models, but rather by the application of what they called this DIVINE PROPORTION. Thus, the shapes of faces and other body proportions were determined mathematically.
To achieve the DIVINE PROPORTION of a line is a rather complicated geometric construction, but we can come pretty close by dividing a line segment into eight equal units, and then cut it into two segments of three and five units.
| a | b | +----+----+----+----+----+----+----+----+ | c |
The shorter part we will call "a", the longer one "b", and the whole line segment "c."
This is a DIVINE PROPORTION if a:b::b:c or if a/b=b/c. One of the rules in geometry is "the product of the means equals the product of the extremes. Does this hold true for our construction, ie does 5x5 (means) = 3x8 (extremes)? Pretty close, 24 25.
The divine section of a line can be used to produce certain geometric figures. They can be used to form a Golden Rectangle and a regular pentagon. The five lines that form a five pointed star divide one another into DIVINE PROPORTIONS. Because of this, the pentagon was the secret symbol of the Pythagorean Society. The Golden Rectangle is still considered the most pleasing one. Most picture frames are Golden Rectangles, and the whole United Nations building is one giant Golden Rectangle as is every one of its hundreds of windows.
When this rectangle is divided into a square and rectangle, another "golden rectangle" is produced. When this process is repeated, a vanishing point is reached which is called the focus. This point is the center of attention or interest for a rectangular picture. When the vertices of the squares are connected by a curved line, a spiral is produced that matches that found frequently in nature: the curvature of a seashore, the shape of the human ear, the spiral form of a nautilus shell are examples.
In the 13 th century AD there lived in Pisa an obscure Italian mathematician named, Leonardo Fibonacci. In his study of the reproductive rate of rabbits he arrived at what are called the "Fibonacci Series" of numbers. This series of numbers is generated from each number being the sum of the two preceding numbers, ie, 1,2, 1+2, 2+3, 3+5, 5+8, etc. to produce the series - 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, 34, etc. Remember the grapefruit? Incredibly, These numbers closely approach the DIVINE PROPORTION. When two successive numbers in the series are used as the length and width of a rectangle, a "golden rectangle" is produced. It is amazing that the Fibonacci numbers are found so extensively in nature, in the number of arms in starfish, the spiraling buds on a tree branch, the spiraling scales of a pine cone, the spiraling disc flowers of a sunflower, the most pleasing musical intervals, the third(3), the fifth(5), and the octave(8), and many others. It is obvious that these numbers extensively in nature. This brings us to the conclusion that all of creation must adhere to some mathematical formula in order to be logical and predictable. The Creator God must be a master mathematician, the master of beauty and design. From the starry heavens to the structure of the atom, from sea shells to sea shores, from rectangles to rabbits, nature declares that God created all things by the numbers - "THE NUMBERS OF CREATION"
