The Second Law of Thermodynamics states that in every reaction entropy will be increased. In order to understand this basic law of nature it is necessary to know what the word 'entropy' means. Entropy is simply the measure of the disorganization of a system.
For instance, if an automobile is falling apart or Humpty Dumpty has a great fall, entropy has been increased, and the car and Humpty can be restored only by the application of some outside force or energy. The greater the disorganization, the greater the entropy. This is probably the greatest stumbling block or inconsistency in the theory of evolution which is based on the mechanism of nature progressing from simple to complex forms by an invention of Charles Darwin called, "the survival of the fittest." According to this theory of survival, nature evolves by favorable adaptations to the environment, and thus all life has progressed from simple amino acid molecules to simple cells to more complex forms and finally to the diversity of animal and plant life that we find today. But, to the embarrassment of evolutionists, nature operates in exactly the opposite way, for death and decay has fallen on all flesh, and natural mutations usually result in less desirable characteristics. In fact, some creation scientists believe that the law of increasing entropy was initiated when Adam sinned, and that in the New Earth this law will be cancelled and things will be as they were before the rebellion.
However, the law of increasing entropy has other implications. It is a well known fact that all forms of energy, nuclear (including solar), chemical, and electromagnetic, ultimately end up as heat. Scientists call this the "heat death" and that this heat will dissipate into space so that all that is left is ashes. This view seems to be supported by the biblical description of the end of all things. We know that all life is subject to death and a return to dust, but our text in II Peter describes even the dissolution of the elements in a final atomic conflagration. Only those that have accepted the Plan of Redemption will escape the destruction of the ultimate triumph of entropy and the final "heat death."
