The Divine Probe

by John McConnell

"For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, even piercing to the division of soul and spirit. and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart."

Heb. 4:12, NKJV.

Modern medicine depends to a great extent on the ability to diagnose and treat medical problems that heretofore were beyond the scope of the stethoscope and blood pressure cuff. Today we have powerful machines that enable technicians to observe the innermost workings of vital organs without the use of invasive surgery. X-rays have been used for years to detect flaws in bones and other areas opaque to X-ray radiation. More recently the Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and Cat Scan machines have extended our ability to probe the softer body tissues. Electroencephalograms (EEG) detect irregularities of brain wave function, and Electrocardiograms (EKG) electronically detect any abnormality of heart function. Ultrasonic machines costing $65,000 can observe in real time the action of the heart and the flowing of blood through blood vessels. They can detect the location of blocked arteries or of any abnormal turbulence which could cause blood clots. Huge million dollar nuclear cameras are used to trace the blood circulation through the heart. A radio isotope of Thallium is injected into the blood, and the camera follows the path of the emissions as they circulate through the body. Patients in hospital beds are constantly being monitored for blood pressure, pulse, and blood oxygen content.

Not only is man probing the invisible regions of the body structures and functions, but he is also probing the physical universe. Unmanned probes to Venus, Mars, Saturn, Jupiter and beyond have unlocked many secrets of our sister planets, and have revealed new mysteries yet to be resolved. Nano probes and electron microscopes are probing into the molecular and atomic structure of matter, while giant atom smashers are finding that the atom is not indivisible as once thought, but its composed of many subatomic particles. Nuclear research not only produced a bomb but is using natural and artificial atomic disintegration for beneficial purposes.

All these marvelous inventions that seek to probe into the secrets hidden in nature are puny compared to God's omniscient probing of the thoughts, motives, and intents of the human heart. The sword of His Word can cut through to the bone and marrow of man's very nature. Man may try to conceal his wicked ways by a facade of culture or deceit, but there is nothing that can shield us from the divine penetrating gaze that lays bare our inmost soul. How important it is that we be found in that select group that stand on the Sea of Glass in the white robes of salvation because we are without guile or hypocrisy under the examination of "the divine probe."
