God's Mysterious Thoughts

by John McConnell

"For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways saith the Lord."

Isa. 55:8

Have you ever wondered how a large jet plane weighing several tons can be lifted into the air? Have you wondered what makes a baseball follow a curved path across the plate? Have you wondered why, when a large truck or bus passes you on the highway, your car suddenly lurches toward the truck? Have you wondered how a person waiting for a train on a subway platform can be swept to their death against a passing train? All of these effects are manifestations of the famous "Bernoulli Principle." The Bernoulli brothers asked some puzzling questions. One of those questions had to do with fluids flowing through pipes. If a fluid such as water or air is flowing rapidly and unrestrictedly through a pipe, and a hole is made in the side of the pipe, instead of the fluid gushing out of the hole as you would expect, the exact opposite occurs. Why, they asked, is air drawn into the pipe through the hole?

Daniel Bernoulli answered this question with his statement, "An increase in the velocity of a fluid produces a decrease in the side pressure." The air flowing over the upper curved surface of a plane's wing travels faster than the air flowing along the flat under surface Thus, the pressure upward on the bottom of a plane's wing is greater than the pressure downward on the wing, and the difference in pressure lifts the plane upward into the wild blue yonder. Similarly, if a pitcher puts a spin on the baseball, the air flow on one side of the ball is faster than on the opposite side, so the ball is forced sideways, or up, or down depending on the direction of spin. When a truck passes you, the air between the two vehicles has a higher velocity so the two vehicles are forced together by the difference in air pressure. The air carried along by the air stream of a passing train is moving faster than the still air on the platform, so anyone standing too close to the track is "drawn" or actually blown into the train.

The Bernoulli Principle is just one example of how God thinks differently. Not so long ago man thought the atom was the smallest particle of matter; in fact, the word a-tom means indivisible. But, it wasn't long until the discovery of subatomic particles, and then parts of subatomic particles, and we are still finding newer and smaller ones. The discovery of the planets and their moons was at one time the frontier of astronomy. Now, our telescopes have revealed star clusters, nebulae, and galaxies composed of billions of stars. What lies beyond the scope of our microscopes and telescopes we can only guess. There are many mysteries yet unsolved; mysteries of the human cell, mysteries of the human brain, mysteries of the stars, mysteries of dark matter and black holes, the mystery of life. Indeed, God's thoughts and ways are beyond understanding, and we have yet to discover many of "God's mysterious thoughts."
