For Man's Sake

by John McConnell

."..Cursed is the ground for thy sake; in sorrow shalt thou eat of it all the days of thy life."

Gen. 3:17.

Everything that God has done on earth has been for man's sake. He formed a perfect world uniquely designed for the happiness and well-being of the human race. The symbiotic relationship between plants and animals, the nutrients in the soil, the abundance of water, the correct balance of oxygen and nitrogen in the air, a compatible ambient temperature and humidity, the abundance of food, the verdant beauty of the green hills and fields, and the brilliant colors of the flowers, the songs of the birds and the sound of gurgling streams were all created for man's sake. Even after man sinned and rebelled against God, He provided for man's welfare. He provided the promise of a Redeemer; even the curse was meant to be a blessing and a demonstration of God's love. The thorn and thistle and the laborious tilling of the soil were to be a part of man's training that would be a bulwark against ruin and degradation. But amid sorrow and pain there is comfort and hope. Even the thorn and thistle have flowers.

Down through the ages of man, God has demonstrated His watch-care and concern, He provided a way of escape from the terrible Flood so that man would not perish; He delivered the children of Israel from bondage by a mighty act; He opened a way of escape through the sea; He furnished them with food and shelter in the wilderness; He led them to a land of milk and honey; He gave them victory over their enemies; He blessed them with wealth and security; He brought them back from captivity to become again a powerful nation.

During the persecutions of the early church God provided refuge and eventually guided His faithful followers to a new world; He has blessed the spread of the gospel worldwide for man's sake. As the ravages of sin endangered the survival of the race, God provided the marvelous discoveries of modern medicine. Powerful diagnostic tools such as MRI, X-ray, CAT scan, and nuclear imaging make it possible to probe inside the body for diagnosis and treatment to prolong man's life. Today, powerful computers make possible the rapid processing of information and the almost instantaneous communication throughout the world. Satellites aid in the promulgation of the gospel via TV and radio. All these modern inventions are used by God to aid in the final spread of the gospel that the message of salvation may be carried to every tribe and nation.

The earth is being lightened by the light of the gospel in finishing the work of the three angels' messages. Those who have lived in darkness for centuries are now awaking to the good news of salvation. Evangelism has graduated from a tent with a sawdust floor to the sophisticated audio-visual presentations of well orchestrated campaigns in large auditoriums. Millions of converts are alerted to the soon coming of Christ as King of Kings and Lord of Lords. And He is coming "for man's sake."
